Beaujolais : the greedy gamays Georges Descombes

  • by Writing iDealwine

Among winemakers worth a visit, let's talk about Georges Descombes. This follower of organic farming vinifies unadorned, in the tradition of Marcel Lapierre, vintages which are distinguished by their character irresistibly delicious. Which is the greedy not resist the 2010 vintage ...

Georges Descombes est classiquement issu d’une famille de vignerons, over several generations. Yet he was rather attracted by mechanical, beautiful even mechanical, and this is still true today. But he was the only member of his family to kindly take care of the vineyards : après une école de viticulture, he signed his first harvest in 1987, on plots of Brouilly inherited from her grandmother. At the time, nothing could stop it and it did not prevent him from continuing to work partly in a bottling company and, as if that was not enough, also devote two days a week to work as in other winemakers sector. It is only from 1993 it will focus on 100 % its domain. Today it operates 17 ha, about 7 on Morgon and the rest, in descending order, sur Brouilly, Régnié, Chiroubles, en Beaujolais-Villages et en Beaujolais.

Even in its infancy, Georges Descombes n’a jamais été un vigneron très versé dans le traitement chimique et cela fait plus de dix ans qu’il travaille ses vignes en bio, with rare exceptions : plots on very steep, impossible to plow, uses of the herbicide. Today, he is even considering organic certification to conquer some export markets. An approach that would require separate non-arable plots.

Since its inception, la plupart de ses vignes étaient labourées, wines fermented on their natural yeasts, and sulfur vinifiait almost full carbonic maceration.

Le vin est ensuite élevé entre 8 and 9 months in barrels for wine Old Vines, in barrels aged two to ten years and raw concrete tanks for other vintages. The vintage Old Vines was sold a year later, in one year lag compared to most producers Morgon. " It is a commitment, for natural wines, it moves, and I prefer to sell them when they are stabilized. "This vintage Old Vines now represents half of the production area, but the goal is to achieve 80 % in the coming years, although Georges Descombes estimated, commercially, it is important to keep a little cheaper wine.

RVF Guide of the best wines of France

Follower of natural winemaking (that is to say with minimal sulfur), Georges Descombes produces wines fruity and very generous indulgence. It has a nice heritage from old vines in Morgon and Brouilly.

Le Rouge & Le Blanc

Is tasting the wines Marcel Lapierre, Georges Descombes discovered the difference that there might be with the general production of the appellation. As a, quickly, he started to work "the way Lapierre". For him, The recipe is simple : "Wine, is often said, but it's totally true, it is first to vine and it is much easier to vinify grapes own, healthy, ripe and carefully sorted.
