Although believed not classified, like all wines from Pomerol, Petrus is the most popular but also the most prestigious of all wines. The legend begins in the late 19th century. La famille Arnaud est propriétaire du domaine, Petrus and already enjoys a reputation that never faltered thereafter. Edmonde Loubat gradually acquires the family units of the Civil Society of Chateau Petrus from 1925. Elle en devient unique propriétaire en 1945. Dynamic and aware of the potential of this exceptional “small” vineyard (approximately 6ha – 11,5 ha now after buying a plot at the Château Gazin), it is as 1947 an ideal complement in the person of Jean-Pierre Moueix, Libourne merchant from a family Corrèze.
Un engouement mondial
This remarkable duo with business skills will raise the domain to the peaks in the early years 1950. Known in France but also recognized abroad, Petrus adorns the table and engagement of Elizabeth II. In the years 1960, President Kennedy and particularly appreciate is an indirect reference to the U.S. market.
The terroir of Petrus, located on the highest point of the appellation (40 meters) enjoys an excellent location. The soil, mainly clay, Merlot is particularly favorable to, which is 96% the vineyard vines. On 4% remaining are planted with Cabernet Franc, much of which is not found in the great wine. The harvest is manual and takes an average farm 20 month (100% new barrels). The low acidity of Petrus makes a wine loving, which, combined with the voluptuous character of Merlot, used to produce a wine with incredible concentration. It turns out simply majestic, a power and richness unmatched, some vintages may keep more than fifty years.
